John moved to Jackson Hole in 1975 after graduating from Whitworth College, now Whitworth University, a small private school in Spokane, Washington. He came to Jackson for the same reason many people do, he had skied here the winter before and fell in love with the valley. His dream, at that time, was to live in Jackson Hole and get paid to ski and to run the rapids of the Snake River both of which he did becoming a professional ski patrolman and a whitewater river guide. He opened the first dedicated whitewater retail store in the valley called the Paddle Shop. He was then hired by a small local sporting goods manufacturing company. Over the course of the next 20 years as marketing director and eventually Vice-President of sales and marketing and part-owner, he helped develop outdoor brands. During that time John's wife, JoAnne, and raised two sons and a daughter. They have watched them become life-long outdoor enthusiasts, growing up in this valley, while they made their way through the Teton County Public School system. He has seen a lot of changes in the valley over the last 45 years. One thing hasn’t changed and that is his love and appreciation for the Valley, its mountains, and the people who live here.
